In a vertical milling machine the spindle is held in a vertical position. Two types of vertical mills are manufactured, the turret mill and the bed mill. Turret mills, the most well known being the Bridgeport mills are usually smaller than bed mills and considered more versatile. While the spindle is held in position during cutting the table moves in both a parallel and perpendicular motion. The larger bed mills have a table which moves perpendicular to the spindle which itself moves parallel to its axis.
